Can you reef a furling mainsail?
A furling mainsail is easy to reef and un-reef from the cockpit while underway – a great advantage in San Francisco Bay where winds can be highly variable. There’s no need to flake and cover the mainsail when done sailing. Roll it up, close the line clutches, and you’re done!
How do you hoist a furling mainsail?
Lift the mainsail head to the mast and attach to the head of the sail to furling head swivel. The mainsail head has the same rope corner as the tack for ease of furling. If your mainsail has no battens, you can now hoist the mainsail all the way and furl into the mast.
Which is better in-mast furling or in boom furling?
The in-boom system is a lot safer and easier to use compared to an in-mast furler. If something goes wrong with the main it will still drop whereas an in-mast sail can cause all sorts of problems if stuck. The benefits have outweighed the money spent and I would do the same again.
How long should my furling line be?
You may lead the furling line halfway down the side deck and directly into the cockpit or almost down to the transom, around a turning block and into the cockpit. As a rule of thumb, we therefore use the boat length, plus 20% as a tail.
How much does an in-mast furling system cost?
The furling drum is on the front of the mast and incorporates a manual override option. Leisure Furl produces eight models for boats from 27-70ft in aluminium or carbon. Average price ex VAT for a 45-footer: US$16,000 (approx £13,000).

Can you sail with just the genoa?
I like sailing downwind with just the genoa. It pulls the boat along and gives me a more stable feel. My main also blankets the genoa, and reduces its efficiency (unless going wing and wing). It’s easy and relaxing to maintain just one sail out.
What is a gennaker sail?
A gennaker is a sail that was developed around 1990. Used when sailing downwind, it is a cross between a genoa and a spinnaker. It is not symmetric like a true spinnaker but is asymmetric like a genoa, but the gennaker is not attached to the forestay like a jib or genoa.

What’s new in in-mast furling?
There’s not much new about in-mast furling, except for those spars that now accommodate sails with full-length vertical battens. The most valuable advances in sailing hardware are those that achieve the dual goals of improving performance while also enhancing convenience.
How does Seldén’s in-mast furling work on a Hunter 460?
We examined Seldén’s in-mast furling system on board a Hunter 460 in eight knots of breeze. This boat is fitted with a UK mainsail with no battens. To deploy the sail, you simply vang the boom down, release the mainsheet and the continuous furling control line, and pull on the outhaul.
How do I use the e40i motor on a Seldén furling mast?
The motor can be retrofitted to Seldén furling masts type RB (~36-43’ yachts). Push the ”OUT” button and the sail will start to unfurl. The E40i winch will tension up the outhaul while the mast motor feeds out the sail. The speed is increased when the ”IN” button is pushed in addition to ”OUT”.
How do you get the sail out of the mast?
To make sail handling easier for a small crew we have synchronized an electric motor in the mast with a newly developed electric winch for the outhaul, E40i. Push a button and the sail comes out in a controlled fashion as the winch adjusts the outhaul tension in relation to the motor in the mast.
