How do you start a Superworm colony?

Drill or melt a small hole in the top of each compartment, and add a small amount of oats to the bottom of each one. You can start the breeding process with a minimum of 50 superworms. Starting with 50 superworms will eventually yield approx. 3000 superworms over several months.

How long does it take for a Superworm to turn into a beetle?

After a week or so, the superworms will begin to curl into a ‘C’ shape, before pupating. The pupae will get dark, and after 2-3 weeks will hatch out into adult beetles. After the eggs hatch (7 – 10 days), very small white larvae will be visible.

How many eggs do Superworm beetles lay?

500 eggs
Each female beetle is expected to lay approximately 500 eggs. It is ideal to harvest the bedding for eggs every 2-4weeks. Take a 1/16 inch screen and sift through the bedding. Transfer the “old” bedding into a new container and place the beetles back into their container with new bedding to start laying eggs again.

What do Superworm beetles eat?

Superworms feed on fruits and vegetables. You can feed them leftover produce from your kitchen. As superworms should not be exposed to water, opt for produce that can provide moisture such as potatoes, apple slices, carrots, and fresh greens. These vegetables will help keep your superworms hydrated.

How fast do superworms grow?

Superworms grow slowly and it can take 5 months or longer (depending on the temperature you keep them at) to become large enough to start the “morphing” process.

Where do superworms lay their eggs?

The beetles will mate, and they will lay eggs in the oatmeal substrate. Once you notice a few eggs starting to hatch, move the adult beetles into a new container with fresh substrate. Add some fresh oats to the egg container and the superworms will slowly grow into much larger feeder worms.

Do superworms eat each other?

Superworms thrive if they are kept in a proper habitat and if you provide the right types of foods. If superworms do not have access to sufficient food sources they will devour each other for moisture.

Can super worms bite?

Superworms also have the ability to bite, unlike mealworms, and have a small pin on their backs they can use for attacking, similar to a scorpion, so use caution when feeding to a younger animal! Many insectivorous creatures are attracted to movement, which makes superworms a desirable choice.

Are darkling beetles harmful?

It is a darkling beetle, also called a mealworm beetle. These insects tend to hide so they can be found under, in, or between stacked hay bales. Darkling beetles do not contain cantharidin, the toxin in blister beetles; they are not harmful.

How long does it take superworms to pupate?

Pupae: When ready to pupate, superworms curl inward, head to tail, and create cocoons from silk that harden to form a protec- tive shell. The metamorphic process of larva to pupa takes about 10 to 14 days, and from pupa to emerging adult beetle, about another two weeks.

How do superworms mate?

After you have some very large, 2-inch superworms, you can separate them into individual containers so they undergo metamorphosis. When they hatch as beetles, place them into a container with other adult beetles. The beetles will mate, and they will lay eggs in the oatmeal substrate.
