What is Entereg used for?
Alvimopan (Entereg) is an oral, peripherally-acting mu-opioid receptor antagonist used to accelerate the time to upper and lower gastrointestinal recovery following partial large or small bowel resection with primary anastomosis. 1 Opioids used postoperatively may cause or prolong postoperative ileus.

Does entereg cause diarrhea?
Since ENTEREG acts peripherally, clinical signs and symptoms of increased sensitivity would be related to the gastrointestinal tract (e.g., abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea).
Can you open entereg capsule?
These capsules can be opened and gently swirled in bottled water or room temperature applesauce. The most common adverse effects include diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence, abdominal distension, upper respiratory tract infections, and sinusitis.
Is entereg a REMS drug?
Because of the potential risk of myocardial infarction with long-term use, Entereg is available only through a restricted program for short-term use (15 doses) under a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) called the Alvimopan REMS Program [see Warnings and Precautions (5.1, 5.2)].
When do you start entereg?
The first dose of Entereg was administered 30 minutes to 5 hours before the scheduled start of surgery and then twice daily until hospital discharge (or for a maximum of 7 days of postoperative treatment).
